provide a floating desktop window containing "At-a-Glance"
information from multiple sources. Extensio Desktop Gadgets,
integrated within the Microsoft desktop environment, reside
on user desktops and provide on-demand, refresh-on-interval
mini-applications with live Extensio Information Services
that contain information from multiple data source including
Enterprise Applications and Web 2.0 sources.

and stay updated with latest news about competition, on user-defined
frequency from right within their desktops. Further, with
Extensio Hot-Key functionality, users can invoke desktop gadgets
within desktop applications such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft
Outlook, and even on PDF files.

What is Extensio Extender for Desktop
Gadgets
The Extensio Extender for Desktop Gadgets is a desktop application
that consists of
- Extensio Desktop Gadget, a desktop mini-application that
resides on the users desktop as a floating window, and can be invoked on demand
on any desktop application
- Extensio Sidebar that provides a home to the Extensio
Desktop Gadgets.
- Extensio Server connector that interacts with the Extensio
Information Server over XML/HTTP and brings live Extensio Information Services to the desktop.
The Extensio Desktop Gadgets and Sidebar
The gadgets have feature-rich interfaces that enables users to:
- Run information services with one or more inputs, or with
a range of inputs
- Refresh themselves with real-time data at user-defined
intervals
- Invoke the gadget by Alt-Clicking on any text, and providing
that as an gadget input
- Lookup related services to enable a 360 degree view of
the input information
Users can choose to have the gadgets always on their screens
in a "Show Gadgets" mode, or can hide them in the
'Hide Gadget" mode.
The Extensio Sidebar enables users to view the list of information
service gadgets available, and select the ones required. It
acts as the initial home to the selected gadgets on the screen. Users can also choose
to have the Sidebar operate in multiple modes - Always-on-screen,
Auto-Hide and Always-Hidden mode.
The Extensio Extender for Desktop Gadgets is connected to the Extensio
Information Server using REST Style XML/HTTP connection. The
Extensio Desktop Gadgets sends a query to the Extensio Information
Server, and the Extensio Information Server, in turn, extracts
the data from various back-end applications and data sources,
assembles it and delivers it back to the Extensio Desktop
Gadget that renders the information on the gadget.

Deploying Extensio Extender for Desktop Extender for Desktop Gadgets
Users download the Extensio
Extender for Desktop Gadget from the Extensio Information
Server and install it on their desktops. Users
get a list of authorized gadgets on the their desktop and
choose the required gadgets based on their need.
Customer's IT department uses the SOA-based
Extensio
Information Delivery Platform and its browser-based Extensio
Studio to extract the required data elements from multiple
data-sources, assemble and publish them as information
services for the Extensio Extender for Desktop. Once
Extensio Information Services have been built for the desktop,
the same information can be directly delivered on multiple user channels such as Microsoft Excel,
Microsoft Outlook, Web Widgets, Web Services, Partner Applications, and Mobile
devices.
The Extensio User Manager is used
to manage the user profile information including the authorization
rights of the user.
