What is Extensio Extender for Desktop
The Extensio Extender for Desktop is a full featured Desktop
Application that is installed on the users desktops and communicates
with the Extensio Information Server using XML over HTTP.
Built using VC++, the Desktop Extender delivers a tool bar
on the users Desktop that hosts Extensio Information Services
served by the Extensio Information Server on Desktop screens,
and the Alt-Click based technology to request for data from
back-end data sources.
The
Extensio Extender for Desktop enables a user to choose an
information service from the Extensio tool bar, and get on-demand
data on the current desktop screen with an Alt-Click on the input
text, as it appears on any desktop application, such as Word, Excel
and Notepad, As the user Alt-Clicks the input text, the
selected information service data is delivered as a
context-sensitive floating 'eWindow' on top of the users'
application screen containing data extracted from underlying data
sources.
For example, if the user needs information about the stock
price of 'GE" as he is browsing some news about the company,
the user first specifies the needed Stock Information Service
from the desktop toolbar, and then ALT+Clicks on the key-word(s)
-ie GE to get the 'eWindow' with related information as shown
below.

Extensio Extender for Microsoft Desktop: The Software Components The
Extensio Extender for Desktop consists of the following software
components

The Extensio Tray Icon: A component that logs in and
authenticates the user to the Extensio Server. The
Extensio Tray Icon installs itself on the Users System Tray, and
launches the Extensio Desktop Application.

The Extensio Desktop Application: The heart of the Extensio Extender
for Desktop, the Extensio Desktop Application implements the technology
that hosts the following:

Extensio tool bar: Displays the authorized query and
update services to the authenticated user, that can be
chosen by the user and requested from Desktop screens.

Extensio Alt-Click Technology: Captures the users request
initiated by an Alt-Click on any word text, as it appears,
from any text based Desktop Application. User can
Alt-Click on any desktop application including any Microsoft
Office 2000+ document, pdfs, Internet Explorer and Firefox
browser.

Extensio Delivery Engine for Desktop: Provides the delivery
mechanism for displaying the results of Extensio information
service as a floating eWindow on any desktop screen. Similarly, this engine provides the mechanism to
receive additional user inputs and update data directly from
the desktop screen to back-end applications using Extensio
update services.

The Extensio Server Connector: The component that connects to
the Extensio Server using the Extensio's REST Style
Client-Server Protocol, for login/logout requests,
information service scheme requests and data requests. The
connector communicates with the Extensio Information Server
using XML over HTTP(s).
